Anthony Pratkanis, Elliot Aronson, Age of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion, Owl Books, 2001

A solid book on many different elements of propaganda from well-known academics. Something of a text-book on the subject.

Jacques Ellul, Propaganda: The Formation of Men's Attitudes, Vintage Books, 1973

One of the classics, originally published in 1965.  Detailed and analytic, it covers the piste well and points are still relevant today.

Noam Chomsky, Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda, Seven Stories Press, 2002 

A brief but illuminating text from this well-known commentator. The entanglement of the US government and media is the topic here. Scary stuff. 

Sheldon Rampton, John Stauber, Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq, Constable & Robinson, 2003

Ignore the cartoons the cover and look deeper into this well-researched book.  Limited to the Iraq war but nevertheless, assuming that it is all true, it shows the astonishing lengths some governments will go (especially in wartime) to 'change minds'.

Howard Blue, Words at War: World War II Era Radio Drama and the Postwar Broadcasting Industry Blacklist, Scarecrow Press,  2002

  A definitive book on American radio propaganda during and after WW2, including the Hollywood blacklist period. Well-researched and detailed.
